How much maintenance wooden garden furniture requires depends on several factors including the climate and the type of wood it is made of. Examples of hardwood that are most often used for garden furniture include oak, iroko, shorea and teak.

You can easily leave garden furniture made of hardwood outdoors without the fear of being damaged by the sun and rain, while furniture made of softwood needs to be protected from rain and other unfavorable weather conditions either by covering or storing. In addition, garden furniture made of pine will last about 10 years if taken well care of, while most hardwoods last about two to three decades, some even with virtually no maintenance except for treatment with an oil once per year.

Teak is the best example of wood that requires almost as little maintenance as plastic. It is made of hardwood species Tectona grandis that is native to south and southeast Asia and has been used shipbuilding for centuries. Teak is famous for its exceptional water-resistance due to a type of oils that prevent the water from penetrating. These oils also protect it from insects such as termites which makes teak an ideal material for all types of outdoor furniture. It is extremely durable and will last about 30 years with literally no maintenance. All you need to do is to coat it with teak oil once per year to preserve its natural color but you may also allow it to “age”.

Iroko and shorea have similar properties as teak and require virtually no maintenance. Both are resistant to water and insects but shorea is less durable, while iroko offers less stability than teak. Oak and some other types of hardwood require more maintenance because they are not water resistant. It is recommendable to cover oak furniture during rainy days and when not in use to protect it from water as well as to store it during the winter months. Protecting the furniture from getting wet by covering it takes few minutes only but over time it can become very annoying not to mention unpractical.

As you see, maintenance of wooden garden furniture primarily depends on the type of wood your furniture is made of. For that reason you should not rush when choosing a new wooden garden furniture and pay attention to the type of wood it is made of, especially if you are looking for elegance and convenience. In this case, you will not regret if choosing teak garden furniture which is highly elegant and requires virtually no maintenance. Teak is more expensive than other types of wood but considering it lasts up to three decades it may be even more cost-efficient than other, less expensive types of wood. Either way, you should take time to think through your options very well because a new wooden garden furniture is not a small investment.

Let’s start with the floors. If you have ill-kept hardwood floors, that is one of the major reasons for dissatisfaction and price reduction when someone is touring a home. I came across a very unusual shelf at a salvage store. The shelf already had brackets so I didn’t have to add them. However, if you find something as basic as a beautiful piece of wood, even a piece of driftwood found on the beach, you can turn it into a unique, one-of-a-kind mantel.

Decorative Brackets

Decorative brackets and corbelsa kind of ornamental bracket that projects from the wall to support a ledge or other architectural feature) can be found everywhere, from lumber yards to craft stores, so your ledge can be held in great style. This project is so simple. Using a level will quickly and accurately assure that you are hanging or installing any object right. ( To use a level, simply align the level on the object you are hanging and adjust it slightly until the air bubbles are centered in the indicated lines).

Get Creative

Once your ledge is installed, you can really get creative. I put three framed flower photos on the ledge, taken by one of my favorite photographers. But a mantelshelf can hold all kinds of decorative and useful items: a clock, candles, several vases filled with fragrant flowers, family photos and statuary… the possibilities are endless.

Don’t overfill

When filling your mantel, keep balance and restraint in mind. You want each object to have importance, so overfilling the shelf may distract from the original beauty of each object.

Maintain the Balance

The balance of texture, material and size are 3 more things to be aware of. when you are arranging your shelf, stand back and look at it once in a while, and don’t be afraid to edit. And remember, of course, that you can change the arrangement whenever it strikes your fancy – once a year, once a month, or every week!

Cover them up of course. Now, you cannot completely cover the vents with a solid material. This will defeat their purpose (and keep you pretty cold in the winter). But you can disguise them pretty easily.

Here’s how to disguise the cooling/ heating system vents:

1) Paint the vents the same color as your wall. Most vents are metal so they need to be sanded lightly and then primed before the final coat goes on. Once you have that done, stand back and see if it is not enough of a cover-up to make you happy. If not, try my trick with beaded or shell curtains. I found mine at a home design store (see Home Decorating Resources) but large retailers also carry them.

2) Because my wall vents are quite large, I bought extra shell curtains, I bought an extra set and cut up one set and tied each strand to the bottom of the ones I hung. That way, they reached the floor and created a long, elegant seamless look. Besides, the delicate shells add a fascinating element of texture and light movement to the entryway.

In order to keep the shells from blowing around and sounding like a wind chime (the biggest in the world!) I took a clear plastic dowel and tied the bottom of the strands to it. I secured the dowel to the floor with souble-stick tape.

It is really that easy to decorate a heating / cooling system vent so that it appears less noticeable.

Consider the qualities of these popular fabrics:

Brocade: has a raised pattern resembling embroidery. It is often used in formal upholstery.

Chenille: has thick needle-punched designs. Its nubby texture is suitable for casual upholstery.

Chintz: is a plain-weave glazed or unglazed cotton. It sets a traditional mood and often has a floral motif.

Damask: comes in various fibers and weights and features a satin-and matte-textural contrast. Use it for formal draperies and upholstery or let it go casual as a loose fitting slipcover.

Matelasse has an elegant embossed look. It’s commonly used for bedcovers.

Moire is known for its shimmering finish resembling watermarks or wood grain. It lends a traditional look to the room. Moire fabric is ideal for drapering and paperbacking for wallcovering.

Taffeta is a crisp plain weave fabric. It works well for formal window treatments because it retains its shape with little support.

Tapestry has thick weaves and pictorial designs. It is best suited for uncomplicated upholstery or flat window panels.

Toile de Jouy is a tightly woven fabric with a pictorial print, usually on a white or cream background. It can look formal or casual, depending on the fabrics and furnishings that surround it.

Cork walls complement fine furnishings. In a practical vein, they can serve as message centers in kitchens or other workrooms and as buffers around the dart board in a game room. Cork walls are easy to install and maintain, and they provide excellent insulation against heat and sound.

The many cork textures available are the result of different processing methods. Some of the natural bark is simply sliced into sheets or slabs, rather like plywood. More often it is ground up into chunks or granules and then reconstituted and formed into rolls, sheets or slabs.

Cork wall covering sold in sheet form is flexible and usually is no more than 1/4 inch thick. Hardware stores usually sell it in bulletin board-sized rolls, typically 2 x 3 feet, or 4 x 6 feet; 3 or 4-foot-wide bulk rolls. These cork rolls can be cut to size, and they are available at some lumberyards. In slab form, wall cork is commonly cut into square or rectangular tiles and is sold at hardware or wall-covering stores.

The surface to which cork is applied should be dry, flat and dust-free. Cinder block and similar porous materials should be coated with a sealer to prevent moisture from reaching the cork, and shiny surfaces such as high gloss enamel paint should be roughened with sandpaper. If you want your cork wall to be temporary, you can mount it on a portable surface – on a plywood panel, for instance, or a wall divider. Once in place, cork is almost impossible to remove without damaging not only the cork but also the wall surface.

These are two most popular types of swimming pools built in the United States – the air-sprayed concrete pool and the vinyl lined pool. Out of those two, the concrete pool is more expensive. Though the difference is not great in the sunbelt states, it is in the colder northern climes, where more steel reinforcing rods and a thicker concrete shell are needed to withstand frost pressure. In addition, builders of concrete pools must contend with a shorter building season in the colder areas.
