Whether you are looking to improve the space within your home for a sale or simply for your own enjoyment, the basement is often the last area of the house to be considered for renovation. Don’t allow your basement to become a storage area and wasted space! There are many innovative and unique ideas available today that can allow you to transform this previously unused space into something fun, enjoyable, comfortable and of your own style and taste.

A game room is by far the most popular idea for utilizing basement space. People immediately consider a basement as the space of the house you can use for something fun that you would not normally do on the upper levels. You certainly don’t have to have kids in order to appreciate this basement transformation. Whether you have a large basement, big enough to hold a ping-pong table, a pool table and an antique foosball table or you have a smaller space that more adequately accommodates a dart board and an air hockey table it can work. With this fun room you can include great lighting, comfortable bar stools and chairs and even a mini fridge to complete the scenery.

If you are not interested in investing in games for your unused space, perhaps you are thinking of something a bit more practical like a guest room. The average home today consists of at least three bedrooms and depending on how many children you have this can mean you have the space for an office or a gym on your main level. In this situation the basement then becomes the perfect location for a guest room. You are not wasting valuable space on the main level, yet you are creating a perfect spare room for company of any kind. The decor of this room is completely up to you and this is where a lot of the fun comes in!

A children’s play room is another very popular and practical idea. No matter how many children you have, you can’t forget that they will be having friends over and this is where the basement can be the optimal space. All you will need to make this happen is carpeting if you don’t already have it and a great deal of shelves, boxes and organization tools for toys. Your children will love playing down here and you can even hook up a TV for movies or video games. It can be a real paradise for your children and you never have to worry about tripping over toys in the middle of the kitchen again.

Lastly, you can’t forget to consider a gym or workout station. After you finish creating your bedrooms and offices upstairs there is often not enough room for a gym and this is where the basement can become your own personal gym. You don’t need a lot of space to make this happen and in the smallest case if you can accommodate a yoga mat and a TV you are ready to go!

There is no better way to enhance you garden than to add it a wooden garden furniture which gives it a warm and more natural touch than other materials such as plastic and iron. On the other hand, many people are discouraged from purchasing wooden garden furniture because they associate it with a lot of maintenance and protection against unfavorable weather conditions such as rain. However, wooden garden furniture does not necessarily require more maintenance than garden furniture made of other materials including plastic which is renowned for easy maintenance and durability.

How much maintenance wooden garden furniture requires depends on several factors including the climate and the type of wood it is made of. There are many different types of wood each of which has unique characteristics. Some types of wood are resistant to splintering, some to cracking, some to water and the others to decay. For that reason the choice of wood the garden furniture is made of plays the key role in its maintenance.

Timber used for outdoor furniture such as garden furniture can be roughly divided into softwood and hardwood. Softwood refers to timber derived from coniferous trees such as pine. It is easy to work and is less expensive than hardwoods but it is also less durable. Hardwood, on the other hand, is more durable but it is generally more difficult to work and is also more expensive. Examples of hardwood that are most often used for garden furniture include oak, iroko, shorea and teak.

Garden furniture made of hardwood requires less maintenance than furniture made of softwood such as pine but it requires treatment with an oil or varnish at least once per year, depending on type of wood and your climate. You can easily leave garden furniture made of hardwood outdoors without the fear of being damaged by the sun and rain, while furniture made of softwood needs to be protected from rain and other unfavorable weather conditions either by covering or storing. In addition, garden furniture made of pine will last about 10 years if taken well care of, while most hardwoods last about two to three decades, some even with virtually no maintenance except for treatment with an oil once per year.

Teak is the best example of wood that requires almost as little maintenance as plastic. It is made of hardwood species Tectona grandis that is native to south and southeast Asia and has been used shipbuilding for centuries. Teak is famous for its exceptional water-resistance due to a type of oils that prevent the water from penetrating. These oils also protect it from insects such as termites which makes teak an ideal material for all types of outdoor furniture. It is extremely durable and will last about 30 years with literally no maintenance. All you need to do is to coat it with teak oil once per year to preserve its natural color but you may also allow it to “age”.

Iroko and shorea have similar properties as teak and require virtually no maintenance. Both are resistant to water and insects but shorea is less durable, while iroko offers less stability than teak. Oak and some other types of hardwood require more maintenance because they are not water resistant. It is recommendable to cover oak furniture during rainy days and when not in use to protect it from water as well as to store it during the winter months. Protecting the furniture from getting wet by covering it takes few minutes only but over time it can become very annoying not to mention unpractical.

As you see, maintenance of wooden garden furniture primarily depends on the type of wood your furniture is made of. For that reason you should not rush when choosing a new wooden garden furniture and pay attention to the type of wood it is made of, especially if you are looking for elegance and convenience. In this case, you will not regret if choosing teak garden furniture which is highly elegant and requires virtually no maintenance. Teak is more expensive than other types of wood but considering it lasts up to three decades it may be even more cost-efficient than other, less expensive types of wood. Either way, you should take time to think through your options very well because a new wooden garden furniture is not a small investment.

It’s no secret that today’s real estate market is in a slump. The recession has hit everyone pretty hard, and homeowners are having an awful time trying to sell their home for what it’s really worth. Some families don’t have time to wait for the right buyer to come along and pay the asking price, and they end up settling for tens of thousands of dollars less than what they thought they would be getting. Maintaining home’s value in a real estate crisis is extremely important. Just remember while cutting spending that it’s not smart to cut home repairs and upkeep – you’ll regret it later.

Flooring
Let’s start with the floors. If you have ill-kept hardwood floors, that is one of the major reasons for dissatisfaction and price reduction when someone is touring a home. Have your hardwood floors repairs, with floors sealed, and waxed at least once a year to keep them looking impeccable. For carpeted floors, make sure that you’re proud of every square inch. If there are loose threads or stains, make sure to have a carpet cleaning company provide you with top-notch carpet cleaning and carpet repairs.

Interior Design
You home doesn’t need to have the immaculate design of a model home, nor should it appear like no one lives there, but it should look impressive. Choose decor that compliments the room and the amount of sunlight the windows provide. Have your drapes and furniture freshened every year by a professional upholstery cleaning business.

Home Remodeling
One drastic way to keep the price up is home remodeling. Not only will you be happier living there, you’ll also be able to ask more for the changes when the time comes to sell your home.

Many neighborhoods feature “cookie cutter houses,” which have virtually identical floor plans from house to house. The architects who designed it don’t know what it’s like to live there, so make the best possible use of the space in your home. If you wish you had a bigger kitchen and a smaller den, or maybe a bigger closet instead of a third half bath, save up to make the changes and consider your home remodeling budget.

*** *** *** *** ***

You never know when something will come up that will require your family to uproot and make a new home, so it’s always good to make sure that your home is in tip-top condition at all times – just in case. Keep these home improvement ideas in mind to keep the quality up and make sure your home sells for an acceptable price whenever you need it.

Painting furniture or cabinet doors, disguising the cooling vent with a decorative curtain are not the only ways to change the look of a room. There are a whole range of DIY projects that can make a room go from insipid to inspiring, in not time.

For example, if you have a fireplace but no mantel, it is easy to change. All you need is some home remodeling tips from us to walk you through the project.

I came across a very unusual shelf at a salvage store. The shelf already had brackets so I didn’t have to add them. However, if you find something as basic as a beautiful piece of wood, even a piece of driftwood found on the beach, you can turn it into a unique, one-of-a-kind mantel.

Decorative Brackets

Decorative brackets and corbelsa kind of ornamental bracket that projects from the wall to support a ledge or other architectural feature) can be found everywhere, from lumber yards to craft stores, so your ledge can be held in great style. This project is so simple. Using a level will quickly and accurately assure that you are hanging or installing any object right. ( To use a level, simply align the level on the object you are hanging and adjust it slightly until the air bubbles are centered in the indicated lines).

Get Creative

Once your ledge is installed, you can really get creative. I put three framed flower photos on the ledge, taken by one of my favorite photographers. But a mantelshelf can hold all kinds of decorative and useful items: a clock, candles, several vases filled with fragrant flowers, family photos and statuary… the possibilities are endless.

Don’t overfill

When filling your mantel, keep balance and restraint in mind. You want each object to have importance, so overfilling the shelf may distract from the original beauty of each object.

Maintain the Balance

The balance of texture, material and size are 3 more things to be aware of. when you are arranging your shelf, stand back and look at it once in a while, and don’t be afraid to edit. And remember, of course, that you can change the arrangement whenever it strikes your fancy – once a year, once a month, or every week!

You may have large wall vents that blog hot and cold air into your house as part of its heating and cooling system. Great cooling system – unattractive vents! So how can you minimize the visual impact of these utilitarian features??

Cover them up of course. Now, you cannot completely cover the vents with a solid material. This will defeat their purpose (and keep you pretty cold in the winter). But you can disguise them pretty easily.

Here’s how to disguise the cooling/ heating system vents:

1) Paint the vents the same color as your wall. Most vents are metal so they need to be sanded lightly and then primed before the final coat goes on. Once you have that done, stand back and see if it is not enough of a cover-up to make you happy. If not, try my trick with beaded or shell curtains. I found mine at a home design store (see Home Decorating Resources) but large retailers also carry them.

2) Because my wall vents are quite large, I bought extra shell curtains, I bought an extra set and cut up one set and tied each strand to the bottom of the ones I hung. That way, they reached the floor and created a long, elegant seamless look. Besides, the delicate shells add a fascinating element of texture and light movement to the entryway.

In order to keep the shells from blowing around and sounding like a wind chime (the biggest in the world!) I took a clear plastic dowel and tied the bottom of the strands to it. I secured the dowel to the floor with souble-stick tape.

It is really that easy to decorate a heating / cooling system vent so that it appears less noticeable.

There’s more to fabric than color and pattern. Like people, fabrics have personality: they can radiate warmth, exude confidence, or convey an easygoing attitude.

Consider the qualities of these popular fabrics:

Brocade: has a raised pattern resembling embroidery. It is often used in formal upholstery.

Chenille: has thick needle-punched designs. Its nubby texture is suitable for casual upholstery.

Chintz: is a plain-weave glazed or unglazed cotton. It sets a traditional mood and often has a floral motif.

Damask: comes in various fibers and weights and features a satin-and matte-textural contrast. Use it for formal draperies and upholstery or let it go casual as a loose fitting slipcover.

Matelasse has an elegant embossed look. It’s commonly used for bedcovers.

Moire is known for its shimmering finish resembling watermarks or wood grain. It lends a traditional look to the room. Moire fabric is ideal for drapering and paperbacking for wallcovering.

Taffeta is a crisp plain weave fabric. It works well for formal window treatments because it retains its shape with little support.

Tapestry has thick weaves and pictorial designs. It is best suited for uncomplicated upholstery or flat window panels.

Toile de Jouy is a tightly woven fabric with a pictorial print, usually on a white or cream background. It can look formal or casual, depending on the fabrics and furnishings that surround it.

Cork, the bark of an oak species that grows chiefly along the Mediterranean in Spain and Portugal (great travel destinations, by the way!) is among the most handsome and versatile of all wall coverings. It comes in textures ranging from the familiar fine-grained cork used for bulletin boards to exotic designs of woven, fissured or marbleized cork – available mostly through shops that cater to professional decorators.

Cork walls complement fine furnishings. In a practical vein, they can serve as message centers in kitchens or other workrooms and as buffers around the dart board in a game room. Cork walls are easy to install and maintain, and they provide excellent insulation against heat and sound.

The many cork textures available are the result of different processing methods. Some of the natural bark is simply sliced into sheets or slabs, rather like plywood. More often it is ground up into chunks or granules and then reconstituted and formed into rolls, sheets or slabs.

Cork wall covering sold in sheet form is flexible and usually is no more than 1/4 inch thick. Hardware stores usually sell it in bulletin board-sized rolls, typically 2 x 3 feet, or 4 x 6 feet; 3 or 4-foot-wide bulk rolls. These cork rolls can be cut to size, and they are available at some lumberyards. In slab form, wall cork is commonly cut into square or rectangular tiles and is sold at hardware or wall-covering stores.

The surface to which cork is applied should be dry, flat and dust-free. Cinder block and similar porous materials should be coated with a sealer to prevent moisture from reaching the cork, and shiny surfaces such as high gloss enamel paint should be roughened with sandpaper. If you want your cork wall to be temporary, you can mount it on a portable surface – on a plywood panel, for instance, or a wall divider. Once in place, cork is almost impossible to remove without damaging not only the cork but also the wall surface.

There are no easy answers to the question of which size, shape and type of pool construction best meets your needs. Many factors will influence your decisions – personal taste, pool use, the conditions of the site, the type of construction available in your area and, of course, your budget.

Fitting swimming pool to your budget

Though your budget may impose limitations, begin by planning the pool and surroundings you would most like to have. Then obtain bids and you will know exactly what your dream will cost. That’s the time for you and your contractor to concentrate on bringing your pool project within the limits of your budget.

Often, the solution is to defer parts of the project. Because you planned both the pool and the surroundings, you can eliminate those parts of the project that can be added later with the least amount of increased cost.

A gazebo or an outdoor shower, for instance, can be added any time – the only increased cost will be that due to inflation. On the other hand, underwater lighting, easily installed when the pool is being built, is a costly and involved project if added a few years later.

The only absolute about the costs of the various pool types is that the portable above-ground pool with a vinyl liner is a considerably less expensive than any type of permanent pool construction.

The cost of a permanent swimming pool varies widely, depending on a number of factors – pool size, shape, type and the quality of construction, location, and the competitive situation among local pool builders.

These are two most popular types of swimming pools built in the United States – the air-sprayed concrete pool and the vinyl lined pool. Out of those two, the concrete pool is more expensive. Though the difference is not great in the sunbelt states, it is in the colder northern climes, where more steel reinforcing rods and a thicker concrete shell are needed to withstand frost pressure. In addition, builders of concrete pools must contend with a shorter building season in the colder areas.

Did you know that fabric is the fastest way of transformation? Think of the color, texture and pattern of fabric as the fuel your style-starved room may be hungering for. If you don’t believe it, travel through the fabric section of this blog for some creative decorating ideas for your house.

This is your ticket to discovering new fresh approaches, fun projects, and smart home decorating ideas and techniques – all grouped in one exciting and colorful blog post.

When it comes to fabric, some of the most striking companions aren’t always the obvious choices. Try to tam up the unexpected in the room using, for example, camel and white stripes, solid taupe cotton, and playful black vinyl to give an ordinary mattress and box spring star status.

A low custom built cabinet provides a space for home owners’s books and other belongings. Prefabricated store cubes can be stacked in minutes to achieve a similar set up. For artwork, wedding photos are mounted on the rectangles painted on the walls.

When you can devote only one area of your easy-living home to formality, the dining room surely warrants consideration. Since you spend limited time there, it can be as formal as you like without intruding upon rooms where you kick back or curl up.

Civilized Twist

Formal dining doesn’t need to be uncomfortable. It is just a different kind of leisure – a civilized, unhurried sharing of your best, from manners and conversation to foods and wines. It is time to indulge the senses and appreciate life itself. The good news for contemporary design fans is that formal dining room pieces don’t have to be traditional only. The design principles for a formal look work equally well in contemporary and traditional spaces. Here are some of the ways to add formal grace when decorating dining room.

Use symmetrical balance.

Symmetrical arrangements – mirror images on either side of an imaginary center line – provide the most formal balance. Use symmetry for some of your most important table, wall, and furniture arrangements.

Have it your way.

Set your own degree of formality by sprinkling in a casual touch or two. For example, you can tie-on chairs that will relax the other elements around in your formal dining room.

Combine elegant finishes

Dress up with gleaming mirrors, lacquered fnishes, polishes veneers, and crystal stemware and candlesticks.

Formal doesn’t mean fussy

Nothing makes a stronger formal statement than wooden dining room furniture with pure classic lines, be it 18th-century antiques or contemporary classics. Team those with lustrous fabrics, especially silks. Raw silk and silk linen are good choices for formal dining room contemporary settings.

Match furnishings for the effect

Pick a dining suite, a pair of identical scones, and matching frames for artwork.
